As October is coming to an end, and finally fall is starting to feel like fall, what a better time to reflect and give back to the community, and perhaps donate? The act of donating to a good cause can give us a sense of achievement and feeling wholesome. This week the 3 main campuses of CCBC will be holding a blood drive hosted by the American Red Cross.
The thought of donating blood at first scared me a lot… Like who genuinely is willingly to get pricked by a needle when it’s not absolutely necessary? Not many people honestly, but when it’s for a good cause I feel like it becomes a whole different thing. I am not saying that it is less painful, but it just becomes more meaningful. You’re giving this precious resource your body houses and you could help someone in a life crisis and even save someone’s live!
I went ahead and did some very simple research thanks to Health Matters ( https://healthmatters.nyp.org/the-surprising-benefits-of-donating-blood/ ) on benefits that many of us did not even know could be an outcome of donating blood.
And this is what I learned;
- One blood donation can save up to three lives, according to Dr. DeSimone.
- “For one blood donation, it takes your body about 500 calories to replace it,” Dr. Vossoughi says.
- Regular blood donation is linked to lower blood pressure and a lower risk for heart attacks. “It definitely helps to reduce cardiovascular risk factors,” says Dr. DeSimone.
- It’s like a free mini physical, “If we detect an issue with your vital signs or otherwise, we would direct you to go to a physician at that point to be checked,” Dr. DeSimone says.
