Are you interested in playing a big role behind the scenes but also helping out doctors and maybe even solving crimes?
Well guys, look no further I have found a very rewarding degree/career path that may be just right for you!!!
You may be wondering, Vivian how’d you stumble upon this?
For starters, at the end of my high school career I had no idea what I wanted to do with life. I knew I wanted to attend CCBC and pursue a career that I could get a job right after graduating with my degree. I was really into that show Dexter and his fascination and knowledge with blood made me want to feel that powerful too. I did my research at CCBC and stumbled upon Medical Laboratory Technology (MLT). I started my journey with my prereqs for MLT. Whenever they had open houses I’d make sure to come in (before covid existed). I was excited but then, Histotechnology (HT) made an appearance one semester and I was so confused about what I wanted to do. I ended up being more fascinated at looking at tissue cells under the microscope in my biology classes that I made a simple leap and switched over to Histotechnology. I got into the Histotechnology program this spring semester and I was so proud of myself.
In all honesty, both paths are great if you ask me. With COVID-19 hitting this past year I think we can all be thankful for those hardworking MLT’s in the field and how much work they have been doing. Same thing goes for the HT folk who spend hours in the lab preparing slides so pathologists can properly diagnose patients. I think it’s just a matter of doing research on both fields to see what you like the most. Taking MLTC101 is such a helpful tool to take I’d say in one of your first semesters because you learn about both paths and you get plenty of knowledge on who does what in the laboratory.
Next Thursday, April 22nd 2021 at 6 PM both MLT and HT will be hosting a virtual open house. You can meet current students, talk to the program coordinators, and ask any questions that you’d like. I really wish you guys would be able to come in and actually experience an in person open house for our laboratories. They’re so beautiful and spacious it feels like a legit lab setting!!!
