This past week I had two great opportunities, both of which involved Self Care. As a Student Ambassador, I had the chance to attend a special Yoga Workshop just for Student Life Leaders. During the Workshop we went through various Yoga poses and breathing techniques. I’m fairly familiar with Yoga, but this particular Workshop was much needed. It was a friendly reminder that no matter how crazy life gets, it’s important to have time for yourself.

Yoga can be mentally and physically beneficial, here are just a few of the benefits:

  • Increased flexibility
  • Increased muscle strength and tone
  • Improved respiration, energy and vitality
  • Maintaining a balanced metabolism
  • Weight reduction
  • Cardio and circulatory health
  • Improved athletic performance
  • Protection from injury
  • Perfects posture
  • Reduces anxiety and stress
  • Boosts memory
  • Improves concentration

The second thing that happened this week was the Breathing Techniques Workshop put on by Phi Theta Kappa. It covered the importance of proper breathing. And that most adults don’t breathe properly at all (crazy right?!).

Breathing is something most people don’t put much thought into. During the workshop, we went through several deep breathing exercises to use in different circumstances. Now I knew that people always say to breathe when you’re upset or worked up. But I never knew all of the interesting facts behind deep breathing.

  • Improves blood flow
  • Natural painkiller
  • Increases energy level
  • Detoxifies the body
  • Reduces Inflammation
  • Stimulates the lymphatic system
  • Calms the nervous system
  • Elevates the digestive system

So take some time out for yourself today. Try some Yoga, take some deep breathes!
