Episode 8 – Connecting Through Community: The New Rec Center

In this episode of The Connectors, hosts Jamin Kastner and Nicole Fajardo Rincon sit down with CCBC student reporter Jordan Scott to talk about her article on the new Rec Center that recently opened in White Marsh.

Jamin shares how tracking down Jordan for the interview wasn’t easy — even accidentally contacting the wrong author at first — but once they connected, Jordan opened up about what inspired her story. Her curiosity began when she noticed construction nearby and wanted to learn more about what was being built. That curiosity turned into an article highlighting the Rec Center’s growing impact on the community.

Together, they discuss how the new Rec is creating a positive space for people to hang out, play basketball, and find new job opportunities. The conversation also touches on challenges, including how the community can help keep the Rec safe and welcoming after past issues.

This episode is a reminder of how staying curious and connected to what’s happening around us can strengthen our communities.

This was a great interview. Jordan really stepped out of her comfort zone with this article, and she knocked it out of the park. I hope she does write more stories. She’s a natural reporter!
