These days whenever you are on your college campus you usually see all of your peers just looking down at their cell phones, talking on the phone, or listening to music. Compared to college campuses 20 years ago where you would see your peers conversing amongst each other and interacting in person today’s colleges seem rather antisocial.

Now, this is not to say that students at college do not interact with each other, however, there is a much bigger difference from then to now.

For college students today, technology is essential in the successful completion of your courses. Your textbooks are sometimes online, you need the internet to do research and you need online software to type your papers and do projects. Platforms like Blackboard which offer more online classes than ever are becoming commonplace amongst the new generation of college students.

Experts seem to agree that since a lot of colleges require such online access, this is actually causing an attachment to online resources and databases. Even outside of the schoolwork, college students are often glued to a lot of social media sites during their free time such as Snapchat, Instagram and Twitter.

With mobile technology, we are always plugged in, always stimulated, and always in a state of constant self-presentation. On social media, college student’s bond by sharing the same struggles and being able to relate to one another because of it. It isn’t even always a bad thing to be plugged in to social media because a lot of college students become friends through social media by using hashtags and even by just following each other.

However, experts also agree the internet can often cause flight from conversation, meaning that people talk through the screen rather than in person. It is also a flight from solitude, meaning that people can flock to their phones in order to avoid silence or “awkward” conversation.

Technology can also be a flight from boredom for college students, because instead of being bored in their dorms when they don’t have any more work to complete, they use technology instead. Many agree that this isn’t always a bad thing since you can find things to occupy yourself online that often can be beneficial in some way.

According to Sherry Turkle, a Spokeswoman from the website “Vox,” “there are certain kinds of communication that cannot be done via texting or video messaging.”

This is a big part of college students’ lives in the current age. College students use technology for communication most of the time, amongst their peers and to speak to their families with whom they do not live with. Even though this is essential for college students’ communication, it is not always a bad thing to communicate through technology.

Students, and even people in general do not only talk through technology and not speak to people in person, technology just makes it more convenient to communicate. Some would argue that our increasing dependency on technology getting us through our days and nights is removing the power of choice from our lives. It is removing the choice of actually meeting up with people for lunch and having face-to-face conversation and instead having lunch alone while being on FaceTime with a friend.

In 2017, more than 67% of Americans owned a smartphone, and that is likely going to increase overtime. Sherry Turkle believes that, “technology is transforming what it means to be human.” It may not be all the way there just yet, but that is what is thought to happen since social media and texting are now replacing face-to-face communication.

While all these studies are being conducted about how social media and technology are damaging mankind, there are also so many benefits that come with using technology. You can learn new things, meet new friends, do more research, and better yourself in many ways. It’s not all that bad, especially for college students.

Besides, the colleges are the ones who are requiring more online presence than ever before. A student now can often only access their grades or communicate with their professors by going online. This is why a lot of college students have to be more plugged in now than ever before.

This is a very good article, well written. I agree with Nyrah. Everywhere I go people’s heads are down. I don’t think that is a good thing perse because if your head is down you are not aware of your surroundings. The increasing number of cellphones increase the lack of personal privacy. There is always someone filming.carmenbillings

The answer to the question of whether or not we are addicted to technology or not quite as clear cut as you might think. Can someone be addicted to convince? Cause that is exactly what technology is. a means of convenience. As this article suggests, smartphones and tablets are how we gain easy access to numerous thing like our textbooks and it is also a convenient way to communicate with many people via social media. Just because we have neglected to communicate face to face with people on occasion doesn’t necessarily mean people have become are addicted. It just might mean that they have become used to or just accustomed to continent technology.

I believe that ever since mankind has had access to things such as the internet, or ways of communicating other then talking. technology has made it a lot easier for people to get in touch with family, or friends that could live out of state. I also believe it has had a bad impact on people because nowadays you can bully someone with a post on facebook, instagram, or post a video on youtube that could ruin someones life. I feel technology has become a great way to learn new things, and communicate with those you love. In a way technology is a good thing but at the same time it is a big responsibility.

I really enjoyed your article. I do believe, that a lot of people are addicted to their phones. It’s now just the way people communicate and most people can’t go a whole day without their phones. It causes issues when people are just walking around and looking only at their phone and not their surroundings. Same with people who will text and drive, because they can’t wait until they are pulled over or something to text someone back. technology has definitely blessed us, but it also has made things turn into a huge problem.

This is a topic that my friends and I have all the time. I do agree that technology does make a lot of things easier, but it also has it’s disadvantages. As far as being a college student, it makes doing homework, exams ext. a lot easier. Even communicating with your teacher is a breeze. When it comes to other aspects of technology, it makes things seem not so personal. You can have a conversation over text, but sometimes it seems that the context or the meaning comes off wrong. Nevertheless, as with everything else in existence technology comes with the good and the bad.

I read a similar article about being addicted to social media. I think technology has spoiled us. We can do so much from the privacy of our own home. With our busy lives these days, technology makes life so much easier. For example, many older adults are in college, and because of technology they can work a full time job, care for their families, and go to school with the ability to take classes at home. I think it can sometimes be a distraction, especially with social media. It is a great network, because it allows you to keep in touch with family, and friends. However, technology is what you make it. It can be a great benefit if you use it wisely.

Everywhere we go, yes, we see people looking down at their phones or on or interacting with some type of technology. Now a days this is because we have to more than choosing too in my opinion. Even when it comes to school, from textbooks that are online or when it comes to researching topics. Their is no need to really pick up a book when everything is a search away from your fingertips. In today’s world this is an app for everything and this world is becoming dependent if it isn’t already on technology.
