MAINSTAGE THEATRE

CATS logoCATS

Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber
Based on “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats” by T.S. Eliot

Directed By BAMBI JOHNSON
July 19 – August 4

CATS is presented by arrangement with Concord Theatricals on behalf of The Really Useful Group. www.concordtheatricals.com

Show Synopsis: Based on T.S. Eliot’s whimsical collection of poems, “Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats,” Andrew Lloyd Webber’s popular musical brings together a tribe of Jellicle Cats on a moonlit evening, who must make the “Jellicle choice” to decide which of them will ascend to the mysterious Heaviside Layer to be reborn. Featuring such celebrated standards as the haunting “Memory,” CATS was an international phenomenon and its original production is still the fourth-longest-running show on Broadway that was revived in summer 2016. A magical, moving, and often hilarious glimpse into the lives of others, CATS takes Eliot’s lyrical poetry and puts it into the mouths of a diverse company of singing, dancing felines.

Please prepare 16-32 measures of music in the style of the show. You may sing from the show. Please bring sheet music.

Be prepared to dance at auditions. (The roles of Old Deuteronomy and Grizabella do not require a dance audition.)

DANCER-ONLY AUDITIONS:

Dancers will be given an opportunity to audition for a dance role only with NO VOCAL AUDITION REQUIRED.

Those wishing to be considered for a “dance only” role should come prepared with four to six 8-counts of choreography in the style of the show. Please provide your own recorded music. Following those individual auditions, you will be asked to stay for the group dance audition with everyone who had attended the vocal auditions. Group dance auditions will happen intermittently throughout the afternoon.

Character Descriptions (alphabetical order)

ALONZO (male/baritone) – A black & white tom cat sometimes considered the third in command after Munkustrap as he also fights Macavity. Very strong dancer; classical ballet training a plus. Tall, excellent dancer who sings. Good with lifts.

ASPARAGUS/GUS (male/baritone) – The theatre cat. One of the oldest tribe members. He was once an actor. Strong classically trained operatic high Baritone to B flat comfortably, capable of wide dramatic range of timbre, ability to play “old” an asset.

BOMBALURINA (female/mezzo-soprano) – A saucy red female. A principal vocalist and dancer, she plays a leading part in introducing several of the cats and also sings of Macavity. Excellent dancer and singer with a smokey strong belt. Slinky and very sexy.

BUSTOPHER JONES (male/baritone) – A fat cat; a “25 pounder.” Dresses in a snappy tuxedo and spats and is respected by all as the upper class “St. James’s Street Cat.” Excellent character actor with very good movement skills.

DEMETER (female/mezzo-soprano) – A very skittish female cat, principal vocalist. Bombalurina’s best friend, and sings the other half of the Macavity duet. On the one hand neurotic and wild, on the other very intuitive. Excellent dancer/singer with strong high belt.

GRIDDLEBONE (female/soprano) – A fluffy white Persian cat. Growltiger’s lover in “Growltiger’s Last Stand.” Wide range soprano. Dance a plus, but not necessary. Must move well. (May be played by the actress playing Jellylorum.)

GRIZABELLA (female/alto) – The former Glamour Cat who has lost her sparkle and now only wants to be accepted. Grizabella left the tribe when she was younger to see the world for herself; she has experienced the harshness of the world and is now a pariah in the cats’ society. Very accomplished singer with wide dramatic range of vocal timbre, and strong belt to E flat. Sings “Memory.” Dance not necessary.

JELLYLORUM (female/soprano) – A female who watches out for the kittens. She has a close relationship with Gus, and is named after T.S. Eliot’s own cat. Practical and loving; a storyteller. Sings “Gus the Theatre Cat” with Gus and may possibly appear as Griddlebone. Excellent soprano with crystal clear top C. Dance not necessary, but must move well.

JEMIMA/SILLABUB (female/soprano) – The youngest kitten in the tribe; she wants to be a glamour cat just like Grizabella was. She is also the first to accept Grizabella, and sings the “Memory” refrain for Old Deuteronomy as well as the happier parts of “Memory.” Young looking and petite. Very good head voice with clear and youthful tones. Confident to F. Should have a pure, innocent childlike vocal quality. Strong dancer.

JENNYANYDOTS (female/mezzo-soprano) – The old Gumbie cat. She sits all day and rules the mice and cockroaches at night. Excellent character actress with mothering personality and a sense of humor. Must be a very strong tap dancer.

MACAVITY (male) – The show’s only real villain. The character is a literary allusion to the Sherlock Holmes character Professor Moriarty. Tall, strong, sexy and athletic. Excellent dancer with classical training and is good with lifts. Tumbling a plus.

MISTOFFELEES/QUAXO (male/baritone, tenor) – A young black tom with magical powers. Impish with an expansive personality. He’s a rascal with a lot of adolescent qualities. His signature dance move is “The Conjuring Turn” which is multiple turns a la seconde effortlessly. Must be an excellent dancer with fully-trained ballet background; preferably small framed and short to medium height. Good high baritone vocals.

MUNGOJERRIE (male/baritone) – Half of a male-female duo who are a pair of notorious cat-burglars. Lots of personality, young, full of energy, impudent and cheeky. Strong high Baritone with clean light timbre to F Sharp. Must have very strong dance technique. Physical comedy and tumbling a plus.

MUNKUSTRAP (male/baritone) – The show’s de facto narrator. A black and silver tom who is the storyteller and protector of the Jellicle tribe. He is thought to be second in command after Old Deuteronomy. Imposing, energetic and courageous manner; exudes maturity and dignity. Commanding presence and tall; preferably 6’ plus. Strong high Baritone with good dramatic range of timbre between gentle crooning and strong declamation, comfortable to G. Emphasis on voice, but dance is a plus.

OLD DEUTERONOMY (male/tenor) – The Jellicle Cats’ wise and respected leader beloved by his tribe.

RUM TUM TUGGER (male/baritone) – A flashy tomcat; a ladies’ man. His temperament ranges from clownish to serious, and often sexy. He is always flirtatious and is portrayed as a feline equivalent of Mick Jagger or Elvis Presley. Strong raw rock/pop voice; falsetto an asset. Must be charismatic and have a great presence, good dance skills and wild sex appeal with a sense of humor. Ideally over 5’10” tall.

RUMPLETEAZER (female/mezzo-soprano) – Female half of a pair of notorious cat-burglars, with Mungojerrie. Strong character mezzo belt to D. Excellent dancer with lots of energy; short and spunky. Acro a plus.

SKIMBLESHANKS (male/tenor) – The railway cat; a fastidious, neat and ordered cat, obsessed with punctuality and cleanliness, yet possessing a big heart and sense of exuberance. An excellent high baritone/tenor with very strong dance skills.

VICTORIA (female/mezzo) – A pure white kitten gifted in dancing. The “official” Jellicle Ball begins with her solo dance. She also does a Pas De Deux during the Jellicle Ball. She is the second cat to accept Grizabella, but the first to touch her. Outstanding, petite female dancer with excellent ballet and strong high developpe. Should be able to play a combination of young and sexy.
