Today is World Mental Health Day.  And if there is one thing I would like to leave you with is, it’s okay not to be okay.

I know this is something that a lot of people don’t want to talk about. But it’s something that needs to be addressed. Mental Health America says: says 1 in 5 Adults have a mental illness. That’s over 40 Million Americans. And something I’ve heard from a lot of people struggling from a mental illness is, that they feel so alone.

There is no reason that mental health should have such a bad stigma. Especially when it’s more common than people might realize.

Here are some reminders I want you to remember. Even if not for you, but for someone you know.

You Are Not Alone

Like I said, there are many people who have some form of mental illness. Don’t feel like you’re the only person feeling this way. Even if on the outside everyone around you seems perfect. You never know how they feel on the inside.

Don’t Be Afraid To Ask For Help.

If you or someone you know is struggling with a mental illness, and don’t know what to do. Here are two resources for you:

National Suicide Prevention Hotline: 1-800-273-8255

You or someone you know can call this 24/7, free, and confidential hotline. Everyone on the hotline is trained to deal with people who have a crisis, and they will also be able to provide you with more resources.

Success Navigators: http://www.ccbcmd.edu/about-ccbc/administrative-offices/enrollment-and-student-services/college-life/college-and-community-outreach-services

For students at CCBC there are people called Success Navigators. If there is a crisis that is holding you back in your education. (Housing problems, food insecurity, counseling needs, and more) You can call the them, and they will do everything they can to help.

It’s Okay Not To Be Okay

Your feelings are valid, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. There may be some days where you feel fine, and others the complete opposite. And none of this is your fault, don’t be ashamed. Lastly I just want to say, YOU ARE AMAZING!
