Final Grades

On Tuesday and Wednesday evening I checked my Simon account to see if there were updated grades. To my disappointment, there were zero new grades and I had to keep waiting.

First off, I had no clue when the grades were supposed to be posted, so I just randomly checked on Tuesday and Wednesday. I figured the grades would be up by Thursday so I decided to wait until then. On Thursday night I checked my Simon account for the third time and my grades were unveiled right before my eyes.

Hopefully that’s the proud face most of the students had after seeing their grades. My grades were exactly what I expected but I was still nervous, before checking, that I might have a different letter grade than I anticipated for one of my classes. Since I had 19 credits for my last semester, I had to check all seven letters carefully before I could be proud. I know there were students who were disappointed with some of their grades.

Frustrated with your final grades?

If so, take time to reflect on the class and try to learn from whatever went wrong. If you were satisfied with your grades, keep up the good work and push to be better during your next semester.

Lastly, if you have a grade that seems completely unfair or just plain wrong, email your professor and double-check. During my second semester at CCBC, I had a professor who gave me a “C” grade when I clearly knew that I had an “A” in the class. I had to email my professor and he admitted that there was a big mistake. It took 2 weeks for my transcript and GPA to be corrected but it all worked out in the end. All in all, if you feel that your grade is wrong, email your professor and double-check.

Hopefully everyone received the grades they desired. Have a great summer! If you are graduating from CCBC, Congrats!

Entertainment: Week 16

Last week, an article that I wrote for the student newspaper, the CCBC Connection, was posted online. The article is about Steven Powell, who goes by the name Jacob Marley, and his concept album, Blackbird.

Steven Powell is a student at CCBC, and on a Sunday evening in late March, Blackbird was released for free online. Blackbird is a story that was written by Powell and he made a soundtrack album to fit the story. The concept is creative and he produced the album with the help of Boogie Madison.

There’s so much more to know about Blackbird. Please check out the article, download the album, and learn how you can buy a Blackbird T-shirt here - The Blackbird article.

Now that I’ve talked about musical creativity from a CCBC artist, I should talk about some from a celebrity artist. On Wednesday afternoon, Chris Brown launched the Chris Brown Channel. It is his own live channel/social network. Fans can track Chris 24/7  no matter where he is in the world through uploaded pictures, videos, and even live broadcast streams. It’s a chance to see the real Chris Brown at home, during concerts, behind the scenes, and anywhere he chooses. The Chris Brown Channel has an app for the iPhone and Chris is able to chat directly with fans if he chooses. Fans must sign up and create an account to fully be apart of the fresh new channel. You can check out the brand new channel/social network here - The Chris Brown Channel

Chris Brown will also be performing at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday along with Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Taylor Swift, Miguel, Nicki Minaj, Lil Wayne, The Band Perry and many more. Prince will also perform at the awards show and he will be honored.

Lastly, there has been gossip about Kanye West and Kim Kardashian all year. I saw a story about Kanye West and his Lamborghini Aventador that was sad.

After a maintenance checkup, the driver of the $750,000 car (Not Kanye) was in big trouble when the gates to Kim Kardashian’s house shut on the car while it was entering the property. The car had some minor scratches but it was sad to see a major mishap with such a beautiful car. I’m guessing the driver ran away and hid from Kanye after that.

That’s all for finals week. Be sure to check out the Blackbird article.

Finals Week

First off, today is the 16th week of the school semester. Secondly, this means this is the last week of the semester. Lastly, this means it is finals week.

An image from the movie 300 with the caption, "This is Finals Week."

Ready for Finals?

Okay, we get it Steven. Moving on, I had my first final today and it went terribly wrong. I didn’t know a good amount of the stuff for the last exam, but I did well on the previous three exams in the class. That is a terrible way to start off Finals Week and I’m disappointed in myself. I’ll be studying tomorrow for my last final on Wednesday. I’ll end the week Thursday with a final exam that I have to turn in to the professor. Alright, back to my bad Monday morning.

A Chimpanzee.

I usually try to progress forward towards the end of the semester but I went backwards this time. I finished the exam last, which is irrelevant, and it was me in a classroom with an awkward silence while the professor waited. After that, during my four minute walk of shame from the classroom, which felt like an hour, I told myself six words.

A red sign with the caption that reads, "Keep Calm and Get Over It."

My 6 Words: KEEP CALM AND GET OVER IT.

Yes…..those six words. I have another final to take and there’s no need to sit around and become frustrated, get a headache, and worry about the past. I have to look towards the future where there’s hope for an excellent final. The class ends along with the final and everything is done. The grades will be established and it’s time to move on. This is similar to football: You have a terrible Sunday game, but you can’t dwell on it because there’s another opponent to prepare for during the week and play the upcoming Sunday. This is my attitude towards my final. For anyone who has 2-6 finals, don’t dwell on the past if you did not do as well as you wanted on your first final. The past has the power to hinder the future.

Good luck to everyone with final exams. Do your best.

Week 15: Finish Strong

We’ve made it to week 15! Time really moves fast, and now time is saying finish strong.  Throughout the 15 weeks of class I’ve learned new things from teachers, students, helpers, and surprisingly, myself. Although I learned new things in class every day from the material taught, the biggest thing I learned was adjustment. Whether it was adjustments physically or mentally, I had to adjust sometimes. Now is the time for the adjustments to pay off. All semester students have learned to adjust to their professors, and now students have adjusted to the professor’s teaching style and personality. Students  adjusted to the way professors grade papers and the type of questions on tests or quizzes. Since it is the last week of classes and these things are known, it is time to put this knowledge to the test.

While studying the material learned in class, the stuff a student has learned from the professor, during the weeks of adjustment, should also be an influence. Look at lecture notes, previous tests or quizzes, and anything else to help study. Remember, you are used to this professor by now so things should be a little easier to grasp. The main two words for the last week of class into finals week is “Finish Strong.”

A red poster with the words "Keep Calm and Finish Strong" written across.

Depending upon the situation, it is usually best to study each final exam one at a time. Personally, during finals week, I’ve always studied for one exam at a time . In the past, during the last week of class, I have studied and prepared  for multiple finals at the same time. However, once Sunday arrives and finals week begins, I completely focus on the first final, and once that first one is eliminated, I move on to the next one. This is my last semester and I only have two final exams. The first one is Monday, and the second one is Wednesday. After that, I have a final exam which I have to turn in next Thursday by hand. Since I’ve been working on that final for awhile now, I did not count it with the main two final exams. That’s an idea of my schedule, which isn’t bad. I do have my 1st exam on Friday so I’ll be studying all day tomorrow. Continue to use any excellent study patterns you have acquired over time.

Remain calm, relaxed, and give it your best. Good luck with finals!

The NBA Playoffs & Janelle Monae

At the end of week 14 of school, the second round of the NBA Playoffs was finalized. There were no longer 16 teams in contention but only 8 teams left. The Lakers were swept to my disappointment, but with nearly half the team injured I was not upset at all. If the Lakers want to make a big comeback next season, Mike D’antoni must be fired! He’s a horrendous coach and the organization needs to do a better job.

Moving on, the match-ups for the second round of the NBA playoffs are pretty solid. The Chicago Bulls vs. the Miami Heat are the first match-up in the East while the NY Knicks vs. the Indiana Pacers are the second. The Heat are obviously going to win against the Bulls who are pretty banged up. Moreover, the Bulls will not get their star player, Derek Rose, back until the beginning of next season.

Although Rose is cleared to play by doctors, he has decided not to play because he is not 100%. Some people have foolishly criticized Rose for deciding not to play, but I applaud him for not giving in to stupidity. Rose should play when he is ready and 100%. I fully applaud his patience and determination as he continues to strengthen himself from this injury.

Meanwhile, in the West, the two match-ups are the Memphis Grizzlies vs. the OKC Thunder and the Golden State Warriors vs. the San Antonio Spurs. Time will tell which teams will make the final four. I’m rooting for Carmelo Anthony and Stephen Curry; those two are the only players left that I like and support. Stephen Curry has become a fan favorite during the playoffs because of his incredible 3-point shooting and great offensive presence.

I hope Curry can help the Warriors pull through and beat the Spurs. I do not like the Spurs at all…especially after the team eliminated the Lakers.

Now I would like to discuss some music. On May 1, 2013, Janelle Monae kicked off the month of May and released the video to her new single Q.U.E.E.N. which features Erykah Badu. In the video, Monae is in a museum and she is frozen until two women walk in and start playing music from an album. Monae begins to move and sing to the music as the video suddenly becomes electric.

The song is upbeat with a powerful message that reflects Monae’s artistry. According to Rap-up, Monae had some great things to say about Erykah Badu: “I just love her. We call each other twins. I talk to her on the phone at least three or four times a week,” Janelle said of her BFF. “It was really inspired by our private conversation, dialogue that she and I have and continue to have… She’s a strong woman, she’s an electric lady, she’s somebody that I look up to.”

At the end of the video Janelle Monae raps with some incredible words that send an influential message. Monae’s album, “The Electric Lady,” is set to be released this summer.
