DIRECTOR’S NOTE

My Dad was a mechanic for a now mostly forgotten, but at the time, major airline. I remember going to work with him some nights, marveling at the size of the tires in the shop, walking up and down empty planes, and riding around on carts carrying around equipment for small but necessary repairs on planes that appeared truly monstrous when standing below them. My dad came home early in the morning from his work, dirty and exhausted.

This, I thought at age 6, was the coolest job ever.

Now I teach theatre; a far cry from that blue collar fix-it work. My mother was an educator, and seeing her work through hard times to get another degree to get a higher-paying administrative job to support my brother and me after our dad passed taught me that this work wouldn’t be easy, either.

It never is easy. No matter who you ask, his or her job is hard. It is often tireless and unrewarding, and the further you go, the more it often feels like you’re giving up the things for which having good work should reward you: Family, free time, even a general sense of ease and happiness.

This musical, based on the interviews of real workers as composed by Studs Terkel, is a tribute to those who work. It is a celebration of the teacher, the trucker, the hooker, the housewife, and all who labor for themselves and others. It is a reminder of the humanness of the person who gives you your burger and fries. It is not a representation of the drudgery that we all feel at our jobs, but an opening of the book of the lives of these individuals, from every joyous moment to every post-work ache; whether it be their backs, feet, hearts, or souls.

To paraphrase the pseudonymous Nora Watson from the original interviews: Most people aren’t looking for a job; they’re looking for a calling. People’s jobs are not big enough for their spirits. We’re forced to separate our spirits from our work.

This is our humble attempt at helping to reunite those spirits with their bodies.
