Director’s Note

“Life’s but a walking shadow.” Macbeth, Act V, Scene v

For a warrior like Macbeth, the Scottish thane at the center of this tragedy, one more death should be no obstacle. Such a small thing stands between him and a throne—the greatest prize he can imagine. Just one death—the death of a sleeping man in his bed—delivers him a kingdom. And yet, for the fierce general who once split an opponent from navel to throat, the act of murder legitimately breaks him—and, in a very real sense, breaks the world itself.

Without the bonds of society—of kinsmen, of friendship, of decency itself—the world of Scotland sinks into horror. The sun fails to rise, ghosts rise from their graves, and the new king spills so much blood, he drives his own wife to madness.

The world of Shakespeare’s Macbeth may be rich with magic, haunted by shadows, and inhabited by ghosts, but it is also peopled with humans. The impulses, emotions and desires of the characters who walk their hour upon this stage are not meaningfully different from our own, giving the tragedy continued power to move and shock us. Four centuries on, that may be the true source of its horror.
