DIRECTOR’S NOTE

James Dean was killed in a car accident on September 30, 1955.  He completed three films before his death: East of Eden, Giant and Rebel Without A Cause.  It may be that the iconic Rebel, a film that transformed the face of America’s teenager into a force to be reckoned with, is the reason why Dean has resonated so much and for so long.  It may be that he died just on the brink of what most likely would become a long, celebrated career, leaving everyone to imagine what might have been and mourn what would never be.  Maybe he would be a disappointment – not just to us but to himself as well.  We’ll never know.

What we do know is, in the beginning everything is possible.   Then life happens.    Life is the best excuse for the things we never accomplished.   And life goes on.

But what if we suddenly caught sight of ourselves, flesh-and-blood real, standing there staring back at us across the passage of time – our younger selves who entrusted their future to us … what would they think?  Would they be proud of us?  And if not, what excuse could we possibly give them?

Would they have had any inkling that this is who they’d become?
